Sr. Programmer Analyst 
Position Overview:
The position is responsible for designing, modifying, developing, and implementing software programming applications used in behavioral and neurophysiological experiments, for supporting and/or installing operating systems and various software applications, and for testing process through test, review, and analysis of software. 
 
Describe the Position’s Roles & Interactions:
As Systems Programmer, the position will report to the Principal Investigator (PI), maintaining broad latitude for professional discretion and judgment in technical/scientific capacity. The position will participate as a professional member in several research teams in neuroscience contributing a high level of technical expertise for independently designing, implementing, and supporting software and hardware solutions to complex scientific problems. The position will develop and maintain cutting-edge research software systems while continuously contributing to strategic research planning and technical problem solving through the full life cycle of multiple research projects. 
 
Describe the specific systems, applications, projects for which the position is responsible:
The position will be working in C++ as an architect and engineer, bringing a highly anticipated advanced research framework into maturity while supporting research activities in other frameworks including MATLAB and JavaScript. The position will be responsible for maintaining the IT infrastructure that keeps several labs running: keeping the local network up and secure, managing data backup, and purchase and setup of computers and networking hardware. The candidate will generate technology-based solutions for hardware and software needs within each lab and bring the technological awareness and initiative necessary to identify new and novel solutions to both known and unidentified problems.
 
Describe scale/size of area, project and/or system supported:
The position will mainly support the laboratory research of one or more principal investigators, consisting of approximately 10-20 graduate students and postdoctoral researchers, who have similar needs for programming support.
 
List required & preferred skills specific to position:
1. Preferred degree in computer science, electrical engineering or related fields.
2. Familiarity with GUI work, particularly in Qt. Experience setting up and/or maintaining basic IT infrastructure. Basic understanding of statistical analysis methodology.
3. Must be able to understand basic neuroscience research and apply that understanding to developing new tools. This does not imply that the candidate needs a background in neuroscience, simply that they have the ability to learn it as needed. 
4. Must be comfortable learning to use new tools and technologies quickly and independently. Must be able to independently identify and implement appropriate solutions to technological problems, with no technical oversight.
5. Excellent oral and written communication skills; excellent problem solving skills. Ability to work independently and acquire knowledge quickly through self-education. Ability to work with a diverse group.
6. Strong programming skills and the ability to maintain the IT infrastructure of several labs. Must have experience developing large software applications using object-oriented languages. Strong skills in C++ programming are required.
 
On call requirements (if applicable): Rarely, some programming support might be needed in the evening or during weekends.
 
General Position Summary:
Responsible for the creation, implementation, maintenance, performance, production support and documentation of various departmental and enterprise-wide application systems. This includes but is not limited to the installation, modification, and testing of new and/or upgraded applications (packages or home grown), operating systems, file structures, hardware, communication devices, and productivity tools. Applies analysis techniques and procedures to gather and then translate business requirements into functional/technical specifications and designs. Using functional specifications and designs, produces all or part of the deliverables. Maintains databases and application system code.
 
Job Scope/Complexity:
Under limited guidance, responsible for full life-cycle of small to medium sized moderately complex projects. Demonstrates strong ability in technology and/or strong understanding of the business/clinical/education process. Builds and maintains client relationships through positive interactions.
 
Job Responsibilities:

ANALYSIS AND REQUIREMENTS GATHERING
  • Define moderately complex business/clinical/education problems by meeting with clients to observe and understand current processes and the issues related to those processes. Provide written documentation of findings to share with the client and other IT colleagues.
  • Gather moderately complex system requirements by meeting with clients and researching existing technology to understand the business requirements and possible solutions for new applications.
 
DESIGN AND DEVELOPMENT
  • Develop detailed tasks and project plans by analyzing project scope and milestones for moderately complex projects in order to ensure product is delivered in a timely fashion according to software lifecycle standards.
  • Write functional/technical specifications by taking the provided moderately complex system requirements and putting them into functional and technical descriptions for use by programmers and business analysts to develop technical solutions.
  • Develop/change data input, files/database structures, data transformation, algorithms, and data output by using appropriate computer language/tools to provide technical solutions for moderately complex application development tasks.
  • Document code and associated processes by adhering to development methodologies, adding code comments and appropriate documentation to various knowledge-base system(s) to simplify code maintenance and to improve support.
 
TESTING AND DOCUMENTATION
  • Create and document moderately complex test scenarios using the appropriate testing tools to validate and verify application functionality.
  • Test all changes by using the appropriate moderately complex test scenarios to ensure all delivered solutions work as expected and errors are handling in a meaningful way.
  • Author and maintain documentation by writing audience-appropriate materials to serve as technical and/or end-user references.
 
IMPLEMENTATION AND MAINTENANCE
  • Implement changes by adhering to the change management policies and procedures for any given project to communicate to all parties the nature, significance, and risk factors of the solution.
  • Monitor changes and resolve moderately complex problems by responding as they occur, by reviewing all processing and output of the newly implemented solution, and by proactively ensuring the solution works successfully in order to satisfy the customer requirements and to provide a smooth transition to the new solution.
  • Provide support by triaging and resolving moderately complex issues to ensure prompt, effective service.
 
Minimum Qualifications:
Required Education:
  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Additional experience may be substituted for education and additional education may substitute for experience.
 
Required Experience:
  • Three years of related work experience with computer systems and applications.
 
Preferred Job Qualifications:
  • Knowledge in the assigned application as well as the platform on which it runs.

This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers.
