*APPLICANT MUST BE A FULL-TIME STUDENT (MINIMUM OF 12 CREDIT HOURS) IN THE SEMESTER IN WHICH YOU APPLY.
Position Description: This position provides assistance to unit staff in handling daily unit management task for adult males incarcerated at the South Dakota State Penitentiary. This position will be responsible for compiling all necessary paperwork to create institutional files for new inmates entering the facility. Transfer information from sentencing and pre-sentencing investigative report documents onto institutional forms. Score information used to calculate inmate classification levels. Help inmates manage their banking accounts by authorizing spending purchases. Determine needs of the unit and order supplies; process inmate disciplinary reports and contact inmates for collection and dispersal of legal mail.
Qualifications:
Applicant must be a full-time student at a college or university. Preference will be given to those with junior standing or above by the end of the Fall 2019 semester, or who are currently enrolled at a technical institute and have completed one year (nine months) by the start of the internship. Preference will be given to South Dakota residents and students of South Dakota institutions.
An ideal candidate with be enrolled in one of the following areas of study: Criminal Justice, Psychology, and/or Sociology. Candidates will be subject to an extensive criminal background check as well as drug screening prior to employment as an intern.
