Asset Management Co-op
Description:
The selected candidate will provide vital information to make cost-effective decisions to accurately forecast rehabilitation and replacement timelines for District assets based on criticality and residual life. The co-op will gain:
- Understanding of the key principles of infrastructure asset management.
- Practical knowledge of water reclamation facilities, wastewater conveyance systems, watercourse & flood management systems, green infrastructure systems, as well as the data support systems used to track them.
- Experience in the review of engineering plans and operations and maintenance (O&M) manuals.
- Skills in asset management software and GIS systems.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
First-semester expectations include:
- Utilize asset management software to:
- Catalog new and historical data, such as acquisition cost, original service life, remaining useful life, physical condition, and repair and maintenance history.
- Organize assets into a hierarchy structure.
- Analyze asset criticality and risks associated with asset failure.
- Accurately locate and verify assets at District facilities using GIS systems. Working closely with the contract operator will be required.
- Perform various responsibilities depending on the current need. Tasks may include administrative duties, field assessment/data gathering execution, quality control reviews of documents and data, data entry activities, cost estimating, and report writing.
The co-op will receive progressive responsibility throughout the terms by taking on increasingly challenging assignments that include:
- Reviewing and analyzing systems reliability of existing processes. This includes the development of reliability block diagrams for water reclamation facility unit processes to identify failure points within a system.
- Participation in Asset Management teams for assigned projects; collect, analyze, and present information for planning strategies with the team.
- Preparation of a Business Case Evaluation (BCE); which includes conducting a Risk Assessment and Alternative Analysis with life-cycle cost evaluation.
- Scheduling meetings with MMSD staff to obtain information related to assets or projects to assist with updating asset information.
Qualifications:
Education: Undergraduate student pursuing a degree in engineering, business administration, finance, accounting, or related field.
- Detail-oriented individual with the ability to analyze and interpret data
- Highly proficient in MS Office Suite including advanced Excel features
- Highly organized file management skills
- Experience with database entry and modifications, and the preparation of technical reports
- Effective communication skills
- Capable of performing field inspections at District facilities, which requires walking over uneven terrain and up and down stairs while wearing a hard hat, safety glasses, and safety shoes. Ability to drive a vehicle and navigate to District facilities throughout Milwaukee County.
- Valid driver's license required.
- Familiarity with water reclamation facilities and wastewater conveyance systems is a plus.
Supplemental Information:
This co-op position runs for THREE nonconsecutive 16-week terms. The student will begin their first co-op term in the spring of 2020, return in the fall of 2020, and end in the summer of 2021. Each term is full-time, Monday through Friday 7:00 A.M. - 3:30 P.M.
