Animal Control Intern

General Description
The Police Department is seeking an Animal Control Intern to assist in enforcing City ordinances and State laws that pertain to the care and control of all animals in accordance with established systems and procedures. 

Animal Control Interns work a varied work schedule: Monday-Friday, 4:00 p.m.-10:00 p.m.; Weekends 10:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. (10-30 hours/week)

This is a year-round internship.

Examples of Duties
Handles all complaints to the abuse, health and control of all animals including physical pick up and transportation, and animal trapping.

Prepares evidence in cases that require court action. Testifies in court.
 
Disposes of animals that pose a threat to the general public. Gets proper medical attention for injured animals. Handles all domestic and wild animal bites.
 
Coordinates and conducts public educational and promotional programs.

Keeps complete records consisting of types of calls, persons contacted, and dispositions. 
 
Checks animals for City license tags. Walks the neighborhoods and meets the residents and their pets. Delivers citations to residents.
 
Maintains all equipment issued. 
 
Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications Required
  1. High school diploma or equivalent.
  2. Valid driver's license and good driving record.
  3. Currently enrolled in college or technical college with a minimum of (9) credits and pursuing a degree in Biology, Social Work, Criminal Justice, Psychology or a related field.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Knowledge of various species of common animals; the characteristics of animal behavior and principles and practices of animal care; geography of the City. Skill in caring for and apprehending animals.

Ability to deal with the public in an effective and tactful manner; perform duties requiring physical ability and stamina; work in a variety of weather conditions; learn and apply applicable laws, ordinances and regulations; operate equipment necessary to the performance of the job; exercise sound judgment in evaluating situations and making decisions; and follow verbal and written instructions; classify, compute and tabulate information. Ability to work the required hours of the position.
 
 May be required to demonstrate minimum competency by successfully passing approved tests.
