Electronic Systems Technician

The salary range reflected above is the normal hiring range for 2019. The full salary range, including longevity pay, is $24.60 - $34.34 per hour.

Skilled technical work in the installation, maintenance, and operation of public safety radio communications systems and applications.An employee in this class is responsible for all phases of work involving communication center electronic systems and equipment. Duties include installing, troubleshooting, and resolving application issues; maintaining radio communication and control equipment, including the digital trunking radio systems, base, mobile and portable radios, communication center consoles and mobile data terminals. The work is performed under the direction of assigned supervisory staff.These work environment factors are general in nature and may vary depending on the specific position being filled. FREQUENT: Lift and carry up to 10 pounds; near, midrange, and color vision; depth perception; and visual accommodation. Hear within 5 feet with both ears; feel; use fingers; grasp; handle; move about; reach; sit; stand; walk; left and right wrist turn; work with and around others; customer/public contact; drive and work inside. OCCASIONAL: Lift and carry up to 50 pounds; far and field of vision; hear up to 20 feet; balance; bend neck; climb stairs; crouch; kneel; maintain posture; reach above shoulder; rotate neck; squat; static neck position; stoop/bend; talk/speak; twist waist; exposure to weather; vibration; mechanical hazards; electrical hazards; radio frequency; slippery surfaces; moving objects; works alone; extended day and outside work.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (Pass/Fail):
  • Graduation from an accredited college with an Associate's degree OR a technical school with a certification in radio communications, computer networking or a closely related field AND two (2) years full-time paid verifiable experience in mobile communications and/or land mobile radio systems maintenance; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience as determined by the Director of Human Resources and Administration.
  • Possession of a Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Commercial Radio Operator License within one (1) year of employment. Failure to obtain the license prior to completion of the probationary period will result in termination from the position.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Possession of a certification from the International Association for Radio, Telecommunications and Electromagnetics (iNARTE), National Association of Business and Educational Radio (NABER), National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET), or Association of Public Safety Communications Officials International (APCO). 

EXPERIENCE & TRAINING ASSESSMENT (SUPPLEMENTAL QUESTIONS 100% of the scoring process):
Points will be awarded for job-related experience and education exceeding the minimum qualifications. Only experience occurring during the ten most recent years will be used in determining this rating. Experience beyond ten years may be included on the application for purposes of meeting minimum qualifications or informing the hiring authority of your complete employment history.

  • September 19, 2019 - Applicant screening will begin.
  • Week of October 21st - Supplementals to be scored
  • Week of November 18th - Interviews to be conducted

PROBATIONARY PERIOD:
Appointees to the position must successfully complete a twelve month probationary period prior to being certified for permanent employment.
