Grassroots Organizer

Clean Water Action focuses on campaigns related to water access, water quality, and environmental justice. Our recent victories include increasing Michigan's renewable energy goals, stopping bottled water withdrawals from the Great Lakes, and funding lead pipe replacement in the city of Flint.

We are currently working on a campaign to shut down Line 5. Line 5 is a 66 year old oil pipeline that pumps 23 million gallons of oil daily under the Straits of Mackinac. The pipeline is run by Enbridge, the same company responsible for the Kalamazoo River oil spill in 2010. Enbridge now wants to continue to keep the pipeline open for another 5-10 years, while also constructing a tunnel to run the pipeline through. We are making sure the tunnel plan does not move forward and that Line 5 is shut down, before we experience a catastrophic oil spill in the Great Lakes.

As part of our staff, you would organize communities around these vital issues. Responsibilities include one-on-one communication, education, fundraising, dispersing information, volunteer recruitment, and good record keeping.

We look for candidates who have strong oral and written communication skills, and who possess good attention to detail. Candidates should have an interest in environmental or social justice issues, non-profit work, or politics. Though we accept applicants from all major backgrounds, candidates with a background in Social Work, Sociology, Communications, Political Science, Public Health, or Environmental Studies are especially encouraged to apply. We do provide extensive training on the job responsibilities and on the issues we cover.

The hours for the work are from 2pm to 10:30pm, Monday through Friday. Pay for full time is $450-575 per week. We are currently interviewing for full time positions starting in the fall, or beginning in January of 2019. We provide a comprehensive benefits package including medical, dental, and life insurance, and 401k; opportunities for travel within Michigan and throughout the US; and the potential for long term growth within the organization.

* Unfortunately, we do not provide any housing assistance.  Please only apply if you have a specific plans to be located in Ann Arbor or East Lansing, MI. If you don't already have plans to be in Ann Arbor or East Lansing, please consider applying for our position listed in a region that is closer to your home or school base. *
