Associate Mechanical Engineer

The Role:
The Associate Mechanical Engineer is a member of the Optomechanical Engineering team in Cognex’s 3D hardware group. The Optomechanical Engineering team is responsible for research, design, development, test, and qualification of machine vision hardware for Cognex. The hardware development requires a breadth of successful development experience using a wide range of technologies including optomechanical design, die casting, plastics injection molding, precision machining sheet metal fabrication and material finishes. The position requires passion in problem solving, learning and applying new technologies and creative thinking.

Essential Functions

  • Design and document machine vision optomechanical components from concept to final release to manufacturing for high-volume, low cost products
  • Innovation comes from “fail fast, fail early, and reiterate”. Quickly build prototypes and correlate to analysis and requirements
  • Lead the DFM process with off-shore vendors for precision machined, die casted and injection molded parts
  • Lead design reviews, error budget development and execution of design verification
  • Assemble test prototypes systems along with pre-production units, define and conduct validation experiments
  • Perform structural, modal and thermal FEA
  • Working with the Operations team, generate validation/qualification procedures and assembly documentation, and assist with the implementation of engineering processes and completion of reports

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • High Energy, Data and Results Driven, Excellent communicator, team player with an ability to step up to get the job done through attention to detail and being fact based and fast acting
  • Proven record of project ownership and working in a fast paced environment
  • Working knowledge of DFMEA, SPC and metrology tools (CMM, height gauges, interferometry)
  • Experience with optics and optical design tools (Zemax or CodeV)
  • Machine shop experience and knowledge is recommended
  • Familiarity with designing Imaging or Machine Vision Systems

Minimum education and work experience required:

  • BS with 2-3 years or MS with 1+ years in Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Optics or Mechatronics
  • Strong background in precision optomechanical design and understanding of kinematic principles
  • Proficient in SolidWorks or similar 3D CAD package (Inventor, Creo, CATIA, NX)
  • Experience using GD&T (ASME Y14.5) and ISO 10110 Optical Drawings Standards
