Lead Career Counselor – Dakota County MFIP

POSITION SUMMARY: The Lead Career Counselor will be responsible for providing direct support to the Program Manager and line staff. This position involves intensive case management and employment services to individuals on MFIP who have multiple barriers preventing them from meeting program expectations. This position will home base out of West St Paul, but may travel to Burnsville as needed.
 
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Assist in oversight and supervision of Welfare to Work Programs in Dakota County.
  • Assist in hiring selection, provide orientation, on the job training, and continued support to Career Counselors.
  • Assist in financial maintenance of the program support services, i.e. reviewing documentation and reviewing support services issuance.
  • Maintain and audit client and staff files to ensure that documentation and services meet the necessary standards.
  • Oversee office functions in manager’s absence.
  • Complete comprehensive needs assessments on individuals referred to the program.
  • Provide intensive case management, including home visits, meetings with other agencies, and advocacy for participants and their families.
  • Develop individual employment plans and assist participants in accessing public and private resources to meet goals outlined in the plan.
  • Complete all documentation and paperwork accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Maintain participant files and submit reporting forms and other data as required by MFIP and Avivo.
  • Work closely with program staff to communicate participants’ status, activities and their movement to compliance and self-sufficiency.
  • Help participants develop and strengthen their self-esteem and work behaviors.
  • Positively represent agency, program, and participant needs.
  • Actively participate in agency’s undoing racism plan and demonstrate an ability to relate to and advocate for diverse client needs and interests.
  • Work in collaboration with the Volunteer Services to assist with supporting volunteer positions which may fall within your program area.
 
 
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • B.A. degree in human services or related field. Global Career Development Certification preferred or ability to become certified. Previous MFIP case management experience required.
  • Three years experience in vocational/employment counseling, case management, vocational rehabilitation, supported work settings, community mental health, or chemical dependency services.
  • Strong understanding and knowledge of MFIP policies and procedures.
  • Working knowledge of available community resources providing services to low-income families
  • Ability to assess barriers to employment, prepare written plans, and assist participants in attaining job goal
  • Ability to instruct individuals or groups on job market, job seeking and job keeping skills.
  • Proven ability to work as a member of a human services team.
  • Ability to provide or arrange services such as career or personal counseling, family counseling, financial counseling, housing issues, medical, mental health, and chemical dependency treatment.
  • Experience and desire to work with persons of diverse cultural, economic and educational backgrounds.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; computer experience required.
  • Able to travel independently throughout the metro area.
