Community Development Intern

General Overview of the Position
The City of New Berlin Department of Community Development is currently offering a paid internship. We are looking for a student who is enrolled in the urban planning graduate program or an undergraduate who is enrolling in graduate school in the fall. The prospective intern will perform a variety of planning related tasks and duties in the area of current planning and economic development. Some of these tasks include the following, but are not limited to, other duties that might come up throughout the semester:

Examples of Essential Duties
Assist with daily tasks that might involve:
·        Assist with the Planner of the Day duties which includes helping customers at the front counter (Permit Application Center), answering the Planning Helpline and helping with the mail.
·        Creating PowerPoint Presentations for Monthly Meetings (including Community Development Authority (CDA) & Plan Commission)
·        Preparing Background Research on Planning Related Topics
·        Maintaining Various Departmental Lists
·        Presenting Reports to Various Boards & Commissions
·        Grant Research & Writing
·        Perform site visits as needed.
·        Update Economic Development website property web page.
 
Assist staff in the planning of special projects, which might include, but not limited to: 
·        Assist with reviewing and issuing Sign Application, Re-occupancy, and other Administrative Permit Applications reviews for Plan Commission & CDA.
·        Assist with data entry and scanning into the content management system (CityView and Sire) for various divisions.
·        Attend pre-application meetings with DCD Staff.
·        Implementation of the City Zoning, Subdivision Codes & the Comprehensive Plan
·        Updates to the City's website
·        Assist with tasks outlined in the Housing Outreach Plan.
·        Assist with updates to various social media sites and handouts
·        Assist with the preparation and updates to the City's Economic Development handouts, fact sheets & Work Place Visit handouts
·        Assist in GIS area.

Requirements:
Position requires a student who is enrolled in the urban planning graduate program or an undergraduate who is enrolling in graduate school in the fall. Some knowledge of planning and zoning principles as well as experience working with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Basic GIS knowledge is a plus, but is not necessary for employment.
 
The number of hours of work per week will be flexible and we will work with school schedules.
