Paralegal

SALARY: $21.92 - $23.60/Hour
GENERAL INFORMATION:
The Minnehaha County Public Advocate's Office invites applications for a Paralegal to join our team! We are a small legal office looking for a Paralegal to work closely with our attorneys by assisting in research, investigation, and preparation of legal documents for hearings, trials, and appeals.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES INCLUDE:
Assist in research, investigation, and preparation of cases for hearings, trials, and appeals. Collect information as requested to assist lawyers with criminal, civil, and administrative matters. Prepare memoranda of case investigations. Draft preliminary documents, which may include researching memoranda and pleadings and communicating with county departments as requested to facilitate resolution of legal questions. Conduct intake interviews for client eligibility and bond information. Maintain contact with incarcerated clients on behalf of office. Make minor court appearances. Develop and maintain resource and filing systems as appropriate. Maintain library and resource materials. Communicate with county departments as required to facilitate resolution of legal questions.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Successful completion of a two year program in paralegal or legal assistant studies. Comparable combination of education and experience may be considered. Possession of a valid driver's license and must maintain a safe driving record with Minnehaha County. Must successfully complete pre-employment background process. Knowledge of legal research and investigation techniques and procedures. Ability to meet with clients offsite. Ability to organize and implement complex procedures. Ability to work with a diverse population and be attentive to the needs of the clientele. Ability to communicate effectively and tactfully both orally and in writing. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with clients, co-workers, other agencies, and the public. Ability to maintain professional appearance and demeanor.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Experience working as an investigator. Experience working with diverse cultural and socioeconomic populations.
