POSITION SUMMARY
The Policy Research and Program Internship is an excellent opportunity for an emerging human rights work professional to develop hands-on experience in policy analysis and program administration in a very dynamic setting of a multi-year, multi-partner project in Freedom House’s Europe & Eurasia Programs division. This internship’s primary scope of work is to provide substantive input into the Moldova MEDIA-M project, which supports the advancement of media sector reform and the strengthening of independent media in Moldova. This position will report to Senior Program Officer for Europe & Eurasia, and will work in close collaboration with Program Associate for Europe & Eurasia, the Freedom House Representative in Moldova, and the Project Assistant in Moldova. The success of the intern in this position heavily depends on their ability to self-organize and structure their work under deadlines.
This is a temporary internship for currently enrolled undergraduate or graduate students that will last for one semester, with a possible extension based on student’s performance and availability. This position requires a time commitment of about 20 – 40 hours per week, depending upon the student’s availability.
The deadline for fall semester applications is August 16, 2019. Interviews will take place throughout August, and the expected start date for this role is September 3, 2019.
SOME DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Participate in monitoring of media coverage of project-related initiatives and social media activity related to media freedom issues in Moldova.
- Track English/Russian/Romanian media coverage of policy developments, civil society initiatives, local and international events related to these issues.
- Conduct research for assessments, advocacy efforts, outreach, and news updates on media and internet freedom issues in Moldova and the broader region.
- With project staff’s input, draft opinion pieces for the Freedom at Issue blog and other relevant platforms on media freedom in Moldova and the wider region.
- Assist a local partner organization in producing high-quality English content for a monthly news briefer, Moldova Media News Monthly Bulletin.
- Participate in the design and publication of the Media Forward Policy Brief Series and special reports under the project, as well as compiling and sending links and news briefs.
- Liaise between project staff, research staff, communications staff, translators and the publications designer in producing high-quality policy materials (in English, Russian and Romanian) ready for dissemination.
- Together with other project staff, participate in identifying key policy issues, government programs, and civil society initiatives that may have any effect on media freedom in Moldova.
- Participate in drafting contractual documentations, preparing payment requests, monitoring of ongoing partner grants and projects, financial and narrative reports.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Must be a current undergraduate or graduate student with a specialization in the social sciences, with a focus on Eastern European or Eurasian affairs
- Strong ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing
- Strong Russian or Romanian language skills
- Strong ability to apply interpersonal skills, and successfully work in a diverse and multicultural environment
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, and meet all goals and deadlines
