Latin America Healthcare, Research Intern

We are currently seeking a Healthcare Research Intern to join our Latin America Healthcare Research team based in Washington, D.C. Our internship program is for 3-4 months based on the candidate’s availability with the option to extend, and with a potential path towards a permanent position at the end of the internship. Selected candidates will be required to work full-time (40 hours per week) during the summer. Job Description & Responsibilities
The Healthcare Research Intern will be supporting the build-out of our Latin America Healthcare practice, helping to construct insights regarding the business implications of economic and policy developments in the LATAM region for multinational healthcare companies. The position will report to the Practice Leader for Latin America Healthcare, covering a range of markets within the LATAM region.

For example, they will be required to remain abreast of major developments in country level healthcare policy impacting public and private healthcare expenditure, reimbursement, local formularies, and healthcare system design (among other policy measures that impact the delivery of healthcare to covered populations across Latin America). The position will require a dynamic, creative and fast learning researcher, passionate about Latin America and healthcare systems. While the ideal candidate will have professional or academic experience related to Latin America healthcare systems, we will consider individuals that solely have experience with Latin America political and economic systems and a strong desire to learn about local healthcare dynamics.

The intern will have the opportunity to gain exposure to leading decision makers within Latin America’s healthcare markets, develop a deep understanding of the challenges facing these healthcare systems, and build strong views on the major barriers to delivering high quality and effective healthcare products and services.

Specific responsibilities include:

Research:
  • Track and monitor ongoing changes to healthcare policy across Latin America
  • Changes to local formularies
  • Changes to reimbursement design
  • Changes to healthcare financing
  • Changes to effective insurance coverage
  • Changes to drug and medical device approval processes
  • Other developments impacting local regulators/payers/providers/and patients
  • Develop written and presentation materials that allow for quick and effective communication of healthcare systems’ financial flows and stakeholder incentives
  • Identify and contact leading stakeholders working within Latin America’s healthcare systems
  • Support in the development of forward-looking views on healthcare policy 

Qualifications & Experience

 Required:
  • A Bachelor's degree from a top-tier academic institution; a Master’s degree (or in the process of completing a master’s degree) strongly preferred. A degree in regional studies, international relations, economics, public health, or business relevant to the LATAM region is expected
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the LATAM region through academic and/or professional research experience. An understanding of the current socio-political and economic environment in the region is particularly key
  • Demonstrated knowledge and/or interest in LATAM’s healthcare systems through academic and/or professional research experience
  • Excellent communication skills in English (writing, editing, and presenting) are required
  • Fluency in Spanish, and/or Portuguese required
  • Strong economics knowledge, demonstrated through academic coursework or practical experience. Candidates should be able to apply macroeconomic principles to real-life country developments and draw conclusions about future trends and implications
  • Demonstrated research experience (in academic or professional setting) including hypothesis-testing, structuring complex research projects, primary and secondary research, survey-building, and other research techniques
  • Robust interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills
  • Experience in managing multiple projects, working on tight deadlines, and working relatively independently
  • Demonstrated ability to cover a variety of topics and issues, including completely new topics

Preferred:
  • Familiarity with excel
  • Familiarity with quantitative economic analysis
  • Personal experience in the LATAM region, including traveling, studying, or working in key markets in the region
  • Familiarity with LATAM regional healthcare systems
  • Work, volunteer, or internship experience in a healthcare organization focused on Latin America or a specific Latin America market
