AFIT Research Internship: Software and Algorithm Development

Description
The Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT) is located on Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio. Fundamental to the its mission, the AFIT Graduate School executes STEM-related research and development in a number of disciplines, including aeronautics & astronautics, engineering physics, computer & electrical engineering, mathematics & statistics, operations research, and systems engineering. Participants will assist AFIT faculty and staff conducting cutting-edge research in one of several technical areas including directed energy, nuclear physics, remote sensing, aeronautics, computer engineering, and advanced navigation. Participants will hone their technical programming skills by collaborating with AFIT researchers to develop software, algorithms and simulations that support a variety of research projects. In addition, the participant will have the opportunity to engage with other researchers across all disciplines providing networking opportunities and career development.

Appointment Length
An ORISE appointment period can be a short-term (less than 2 weeks), summer (10-12 weeks), or yearlong appointment. Faculty appointments are generally for 10-12 weeks during the summer, but appointments during the academic year are also available. Appointments may be extended depending on funding availability, project assignment, program rules, and availability of the participant.

Participant Benefits
Participants will receive a stipend to be determined by USAFIT. Stipends are typically based on the participant’s academic standing, discipline, experience, and research facility location. Other benefits may include the following:

Nature of Appointment
The participant will not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DOD, or any other office or agency. Instead, the participant will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment.

Qualifications
Participants should be current undergraduate or graduate students pursuing degrees in software or computer engineering, a physical science, or an engineering discipline. Participants should have experience coding in a suite of computer program languages including MATLAB, C++, and Python.  A strong GPA, experience working in technical project teams, and an interest in technology development are highly desired.
