Aquatic Invasive Species Intern-Pike Lake

AQUATIC INVASIVE SPECIES INTERN - PIKE LAKE
The Washington County Planning and Parks Department in contract with the Pike Lake Protection and Rehabilitation District, has a great opportunity for an Aquatic Invasive Species Intern for Pike Lake in Hartford. The primary duty of the intern will be conducting Clean Boats, Clean Waters watercraft inspections at boat landings on Pike Lake. There may be opportunities on a limited basis to assist the AIS Coordinator with outreach and education, lake surveys, and AIS removal efforts. A majority of the time will be spent at the boat landings on Pike Lake. Some office work and database entry will be required. The purpose of the position is to increase AIS awareness and education to boaters, anglers, and the general public and to ensure boaters are not contributing to the spread of AIS. This position will require working weekends and major holidays up to a maximum of 300 hours throughout the summer. The intern will be hired and paid through the County. Training and work direction will be provided by the AIS Coordinator and members of the Pike Lake Protection and Rehabilitation District.
Hours/Pay:
Must have flexible schedule with ability to work most weekend throughout the summer with a flexible schedule working potentially early mornings and early evenings, including boating events, and holidays from Memorial Day, July 4th, and Labor Day, to match peak use of the public boat landings. Applicants will be expected to work most weekends, including holiday weekends. Pay is $10/hr.
Required Qualification:
High school graduate.
Ability to work outdoors in variable weather conditions for extended periods of time.
Organized, self‐motivated, ability to multi‐task, and work independently.
Ability to frequently stand; walk; sit; and stoop; kneel, crouch, or crawl. Occasionally climb or balance. Ability to regularly lift or move 10 pounds and occasionally lift or move 50 pounds.
Enthusiastic, friendly, and able to demonstrate excellent verbal communication skills.
Must possess a valid State of Wisconsin Driver’s License and have access to reliable transportation and cell phone.
Must complete WDNR Boater Safety Certificate by time of hire.
Preferred Qualifications:
Knowledge of aquatic ecology, the impacts that aquatic invasive species can have on lakes, streams and wetlands, and ways to reduce the spread of AIS.
Education or work history in biology, ecology, or natural resources.
Ability to maneuver as well as load and unload kayaks/canoes/motorboats.
Experience using GPS and mapping software.
Snorkeling or diving experience and PADI SCUBA Certification.
Experience pressing aquatic vascular plants.
