Education, Career, & Community Assistant (AmeriCorps Member)

Service Description:

As the Education, Career, & Community Assistant AmeriCorps Member you will assist professional staff, ensuring YouthBuild members achieve education, career, and community/civic engagement goals. This position is an excellent opportunity to serve the Milwaukee community, be a part of a team, and grow professionally.

YouthBuild
Milwaukee Christian Center’s YouthBuild Program empowers young adults, ages 18-24, to overcome challenges and move towards family sustaining careers through education and hands-on construction training while building homes for low-income families.

Reports to: YouthBuild Coordinator
Program Year: 9/01/2019 to 8/31/2020
Schedule: Fulltime (complete 1700 hours of service during program year)
Benefits: Training, health coverage, stipend (translates to $10/hour), childcare assistance if eligible, and education award upon successful completion of service.
Age Requirement: 18-24 years of age (at beginning of service year)
Desired Education: College graduate strongly desired; some post-secondary experience required.

Service Areas:
Community and Economic Development, Housing, Education, Community Outreach

Member Duties:
1. Education - Tutor members who are working towards GED/HSED completion or who are preparing for trade union testing
2. Career - Assist in preparing and delivering career development programming including but not limited to practicing communication skills with members, hosting Lunch and Learns, facilitating job site tours, and building partnerships with employers.
3. Community - Coordinate opportunities for community/civic engagement including but not limited to planning and facilitating service days and projects.
4. Work with a team of two other full-time AmeriCorps members, twenty part-time AmeriCorps members, and six program staff
5. Upon MCC approval, transport members and materials to and from job sites, testing locations, etc.

Member Qualifications:
1. Must be between 18-24 years old (at beginning of service year)
2. Must reside in the City of Milwaukee by start of service year
3. College graduate strongly desired; some post-secondary experience required
4. Interest in education, community and economic development, construction, housing, and/or workforce development
5. Valid driver’s license and good driving record

Terms: Permits working at another job during off hours; Uniforms provided and required; Permits attendance at school during off hours
