Special Education Intensive Needs Teacher

JOB QUALIFICATIONS:
To apply a candidate must have or be eligible to obtain a current Alaska Teacher Certificate issued by the Alaska Department of Education with an endorsement in Special Education. Experience and training in instruction of students with intensive needs strongly preferred. Must be able to work cooperatively with all members of the staff and communicate effectively with parents. Long range planning is required in preparing lessons.

JOB DESCRIPTION:
This position will be working extensively with students with significant cognitive disabilities and behavioral challenges. Will be a part of a building team that plans a program of instruction for students with significant disabilities using a variety of methodology including direct instruction, classroom and community based functional skills training. Will provide physical support and assistance to students in transitioning, for mobility, and for personal care needs. Must be able to collect and interpret data. Must be able to provide instruction that meets students’ individual needs, abilities and interest as determined by tests, records and observations. Will be responsible for supporting inclusion in the general education environment. Will coordinate with general education teachers to provide needed support within the general classroom as well as designing and delivering necessary pull-out instruction. Will be responsible for developing students’ functional life, academic, social, and pre-vocational skills. Will assume duties such as testing, IEP writing, maintaining case files and records.
Must be able to conduct parent and teacher conferences and run effective, well-organized meetings. Must be able to create individual student and paraprofessional schedules, including multiple services provided by related service personnel. Must be able to manage and correct a wide variety of student behavior with pro-active positive behavior plans. Must be able to create individual student and paraprofessional schedules including multiple services provided by related service personnel. Must be able to effectively provide program direction and training to paraprofessionals. Must keep informed of current developments in his/her field of Special Education. Requires a willingness to teach in an online blended format. Teacher will work under the direct supervision of the building administrator. Will work cooperatively with the Pupil Services Director and Program Manager to maintain an effective special education program that conforms to State standards. Other duties as assigned.
