Family Support Specialist - Home Visiting

Great Lakes Inter-Tribal Council is a non-profit organization formed by the Native American Tribes of Wisconsin.  We serve all WI tribes by providing administration of grant-funded programs either directly or with sub grants. Programs range from Child and Maternal services to Education to Disability and Elder benefits. Our Mission is: To Enhance the quality of life for all Native People.
 
Family Support Specialist

The Family Support Specialist is responsible for initiating and maintaining regular, weekly contact and support with recipient families for up to five years. This service position will follow the Healthy Families America model of care and use the Growing Great Kids curriculum. Attendance as scheduled is an essential function of this position. Frequent local travel is expected in this position. First year training is extensive.

Principal Duties
·        Establish a trusting relationship with recipient families.
·        Assist in strengthening the parent-child relationship.
·        Assist with improvement of skills to optimize the home environment.
·        Assist in developing and maintaining an advisory group.
·        Improve the family support systems.
·        Increase the family’s ability to problem-solve and assume the role of advocate for themselves and their children.
·        Identify other needs of the family, provide referrals to other services when necessary, and assist families to complete the referral/contact/appointment.
·        Assist the family in establishing goals and creates a plan for accomplishment of those goals.
·        Assess the normal growth and development of the target child.
·        Complete data entry within 48 hours of family contact.
·        Manage complicated schedules ensuring participation in all necessary meetings and trainings including; weekly case management meetings, weekly reflective supervision meetings, COP meetings, CQI meetings, quarterly grantee meetings and all Healthy Families America (HFA) trainings.
·        Able to work independently and within the Home Visiting Team.
·        Engage in networking activities to remain current on the availability of health and human services available to Native Americans.
·        Assure that all services are delivered in a culturally sensitive manner.
·        Participate on various committees outside and within the organization as deemed necessary and appropriate to the position and supervisor.
·        Attend all training sessions and meetings as scheduled.
·        Attend technical conferences, seminars, workshops and other educational events to stay current on technological advances.
·        Perform other duties as necessary to fulfill the responsibilities of this position.
 
This is a non exempt full-time position working at the main site in Lac Du Flambeau, WI. The starting wage for this position is $19 per hour with benefits including: Annual/Personal Leave and Holiday Pay, Health, Dental, Life & AD&D, STD and LTD Insurance, FSA and 403(b) Retirement Plan. Regular work hours are normally Monday through Friday, 40 hours a week. There will be variation in work hours due to special projects, deadlines, and other concerns.  

 
 
Qualifications: High School Diploma or equivalent required. Associates Degree in Early Childhood preferred and/or equivalent experience working in the field. Infant Mental Health Endorsement preferred. Experience and willingness to work with a Native American Tribal organization and/or not-for-profit agency desirable. Knowledge of infant and child development, parent-child attachment and maternal-infant health. Experience in working with or providing services to children and families. Respect for and sensitivity to the needs and rights of others, including those with differing cultural, racial, sexual, or ethnic identities. Ability to establish trusting relationships and work effectively with mothers, fathers and extended family. Acceptance of individual differences. Belief that children need to be nurtured. Experience and willingness to work with diverse populations present among the target population. Open to reflective practices (i.e. has the capacity for introspection, communicates awareness in relation to others, recognizes value of supervision. Etc.) Must possess valid driver’s license, have access to reliable transportation with adequate insurance and be able to travel.
