What I liked

I loved to be able to meet EY employees in the office I am hoping to work when I graduate. The internship is vary basic, shadowing people. However, I was able to take it a step further and work on projects that I was very interested in. For example, I was able to shadow and help with basic data management in a team that was just entering busy season. That was the best part of my internship!

What I wish was different

Currently, this internship is available for college students in any year (1st, 2nd, 3rd) of specific minority groups. I think this experience would be more unique if EY would open this internship for students that are 2 years away from getting their 150 credits instead of having students do the exact same internship for several years. I think if EY makes it more concentrated in students with more accounting education then the experience could be more fulfilling for their career.

Advice

Look for all the opportunities you can get, and don't be afraid to ask anything. This is your chance to ask questions and show that you have interest in working with the company, and provide useful insights.

Advisory (Risk) Intern

What I liked

Virtually unlimited access to non-confidential company resources and materials, flexibility of work within office hours when there are no client-driven deadlines, helpful and friendly staff. Was also given actual responsibilities - my first analysis assignment was used in a client presentation. Minimal coddling.

What I wish was different

I ended up working on projects related to steel and natural resource companies, neither of which are particularly interesting to me. I guess more interesting projects would have been nice, but of course that depends on what clients projects are available at a given time.

Advice

Be quick on the uptake, error-check as much as you can to hand in flawless work, ask questions whenever possible. Also, companies like this usually have a ton of proprietary learning resources - take in as much of it as you can, even if you have to stay on after work. No one is going to chase you out, usually.

What I liked

I was constantly learning and all the staff and senior members were very welcoming and encouraging. I got to come to all executive and clients meetings and built an actual model. Plus, doing business in Vietnam was just very exciting.

What I wish was different

I wish I had stay longer because it was the best chapter of my life.

Advice

Bring in your best attitude and be happy to put your head down, because everyone will be supportive of you if you show that you are genuinely interested in learning and being a part of the team.

Great ability to network with other peers my age within both the office I worked in and related offices in other cities, opportunities to travel to other states for various engagements, thought-provoking work

Did not always have enough work to fill up my whole week

Be open to opportunities that take you outside your comfort zone; it's where you'll learn the most about what areas you want to work in and a ton about yourself!

Meet as many people as possible-ask others for help whenever you are free. The more people you meet, the more opportunities for work assignments. This will allow for a higher number of reviews at the conclusion of the internship, which helps in getting a return offer.

What I liked

The company culture is something that made my experience really rewarding. The people I met were all genuine and took a real interest in making sure I succeeded. EY also took all the interns to Disney World at the end, which was obviously a plus.

What I wish was different

Truthfully, I don't really wish much different from my experience. My project was really enjoyable for me, and my team made my time working fun. This obviously wasn't the case for every intern since everyone has different preferences, but from what I heard from most other interns, they all had positive thoughts.

Advice

It's okay to not know everything. My first day after just listening to my teammates, I thought I had no reason to be in the room because I didn't understand anything that was being said. As time went on however, I realized that all that really matters is that I put in the effort to learn what I don't know. Everyone in a higher position was once in your shoes too, so not knowing everything on your first day or week is normal - you're there to learn.

What I liked

I liked the rotational aspect of the internship. I was able to gain brief insights on each of the service lines that EY provides. Having the ability to experience each of the service lines allowed me to make a knowledgeable decision about which service line I would like to pursue as a career in the future. I also enjoyed interacting and working with different engagement teams, which consisted of EY employees ranging from staff to managers to principals/partners. The variety of experiences that I've had during the six-week internship at EY was phenomenal and I would recommend it to anyone who is unsure of which career path to choose.

What I wish was different

I would have liked if the internship was longer so that more time was allotted for each of the rotations. I also wish that I networked a little more. While I was able to meet a lot of people during the internship, I feel that I could have made better efforts to get to know more people at the firm.

Advice

I would suggest that, regardless of the firm or the industry, you should put your best foot forward and go that extra mile to stand out. Although you may not be a full-time employee at the firm, I would treat it as such. Don't take for granted the opportunities that you are given and always put in 110% with a willingness to learn and an eagerness to contribute to the firm as a whole and to those around you!

You are going to meet so many people and it might help to jot down notes on names and positions.

What I liked

I worked at one client the entire summer which allowed me to get to know my team well and develop a good understanding of my client. I was on a big client so it was interesting for me to learn about the workings of such a large company.

What I wish was different

I wish I had the chance to work with more interns. Since I spent most of my time at the client site, I did not get to work with many other interns.

Advice

It's important to go into this experience with an open mind and be willing to ask questions and learn. It may feel like there is a lot of information being thrown at you at first, but your team will be happy to answer any questions and help you understand the work you are doing.

What I liked

I liked how I was really able to get the all around experience of working for a "big four" as well as working in the city. The experience showed me what my work day would be like and what travel time looked like going to the city in the morning.

What I wish was different

Nothing at all. EY does a great job of making sure not only do you get great exposure to the services they perform and the work they do, but also what their "big picture" is and how you can help them reach their goals.

Advice

One piece of advice I would share about not only this experience but just internships in general, is to ask as many questions as you can. If given a task, try it for a couple minutes and if you're struggling don't hesitate to ask. The more questions you ask, the better off you will be in the future.

Forensic Technology and Discovery Services Intern

What I liked

They treated their interns very well and hosted a lot of intern events for team bonding and intern bonding. They also had ongoing training for the interns in my department throughout the internship to teach us new skills and help us learn more about the work, which was very useful for me. And of course, the international intern leadership conference was very fun!

What I wish was different

In the beginning they didn't seem ready for interns because they didn't have much work to give out to interns, but it got better as the internship progressed.

Advice

Make sure you use this opportunity to meet new people and talk with people in all levels!

I would advise another student to be confident in their abilities and knowledge when entering an internship with a Big Four. It can be intimidating, but Duquesne honestly prepared me so well and I definitely know more than I even think I do.
